A Historic Cycling Milestone in Gilgit-Baltistan

Introduction: A Historic Cycling Milestone in Gilgit-Baltistan

The majestic lands of Gilgit-Baltistan witnessed a new chapter in adventure sports history as members of the Baltistan Cycling Club successfully completed the first-ever cycling journey from Deosai to Kharmang Valley a rugged, high-altitude trail at 4565 meters.

This bold expedition was led by our passionate team: Abid, Zulqarnain, Ejaz, and Hasnain. Together, we conquered what few had even attempted.

Why Deosai to Kharmang Valley is a Dream Trail for Cyclists

  • Elevation: 4565 meters above sea level
  • Rideability: 98% rideable terrain
  • Location: From Deosai National Park to Kharmang District
  • Region: Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

Deosai Plateau, often called the ‘Land of Giants’, is one of the highest plateaus in the world. Extending into Kharmang Valley through hidden routes, this trail remained unexplored by cyclists until now. With its vast open plains, flowing rivers, alpine wildflowers, and challenging gravel paths, the route is an adventure cyclist’s dream.

The Journey: Cycling Deosai to Kharmang – What It Took

The ride began in the early morning hours, with the chilly breeze of Deosai brushing past us. We packed light but came prepared:

  • Mountain bikes with durable tires
  • Essential gear for high-altitude survival
  • Energy snacks and hydration packs
  • And above all, team spirit

As we climbed higher and deeper into the remote wilderness, the true test began. The path demanded strength, focus, and endurance but the 360° views of raw nature were more than worth it. Marmots greeted us.

A Heartfelt Thanks to the People of Chhatpa ❤️

After a long and demanding day on the trail, we were welcomed with open arms by the kind-hearted people of Chhatpa, where we stayed overnight. Their warm hospitality, delicious food, and the peaceful space they offered gave us the energy we needed for the final stretch of our ride.

We are deeply grateful to the local families for treating us not as guests, but as one of their own. It’s this spirit of Balti generosity and community that makes adventures in these remote valleys not just unforgettable—but meaningful.

“Evening rest at Chhatpa village ,Refueling with local hospitality before the final ride to Back to skardu.”
